Amethyst - The Birthstone for February.

Amethyst is my favourite crystal. It is a purple variety of Quartz and it's colour ranges from deep purple to pale Lilac. Some other coloured Quartz crystals are also sometimes classed as Amethyst (Red Amethyst from Ontario or Green Amethyst from Uruguay).

Amethyst is also often heat treated and dyed, which changes it to a yellow/orange colour, this treated Amethyst is then sold as Citirine. You can often tell the difference between natural citrine and heat treated Amethyst by examining the crystals. Sometines the matrix shows signs of being burnt, it appears blackened. Look carefully between the crystal points, check for orange powder and bits of carbon. Heating also causes the specimen to become brittle, and crystals can easily come loose from the matrix.

Amethyst is the Birthstone for the month of February and is our featured "crystal of the week" this week. It is found naturally as Crystals either in Geodes, on Crystal Plates or Beds, as single Crystals or in a massive form. The massive form of Amethyst is often cut and shaped into eggs, spheres, massage wands or carved into shapes such as Crystal Skulls, Gemstone Angels or Gemstone animals.

The finest Gem Quality Amethyst is mined in Zambia and is faceted for use in jewellery. The finest specimens of Amethyst from Zambia are a beautiful deep purple and contain virtually no inclusions or imperfections.

Our Amethyst mainly comes from Uruguay, where the finest Geodes are found. Amethyst from Uruguay is truly stunning, and the AAA grade Amethyst from here is almost as good as Zambian gem quality Amethyst. Please take the time to view our current stock in our webstore: www.thecrystalrockstore.com

We prefer this AAA grade Amethyst from Uruguay as it is completely natural and has a very deep purple colour, which almost completely fills each crystal. Lower grades of Amethyst have the colour concentrated mainly in the points or tips of the crystals and tend to be a paler purple or lilac colour.

We also have some amazing and interesting Spirit Quartz or Spirit Amethyst crystals in stock. These specimens are from South Africa and are stunning, covered in shimmering little crystals, they would make fantastic additions to any collection. You can view these specimens here: Spirit Quartz
